Chapter Nine
Reality intruded. In instant-replay format complete with snarky commentary, Jo started to go over what she’d done and said. She cringed. She must have been a courtesan in a past life, because seriously, could she have acted any sluttier?
Post-sex guilt was something of a tradition with her, as was the sudden wanton behavior.
Only this time, she couldn’t just shut down and give the guy the brush off.
Not because he wasn’t human…because he’d technically been a virgin. Mind-fucking virgins was a crime in line with developing biological weapons as far as Jo was concerned. She knew what it was like to have what was supposed to be an intimate experience made ugly, and she would never do that to Tokaki.
The problem was she didn’t know how to be normal after sex. She didn’t cuddle, didn’t do pillow talk. She was of the take-your-pants-and-leave school. It worked for her. Guys were so startled by this or relieved—she’d learned to read that expression—that they didn’t question the power dynamic of Jo, who was usually sleeping with men at least two points more attractive than her on a one to ten scale.
She couldn’t do that with Tokaki.
However, she couldn’t breathe, so he was going to have to get off her.
“Tokaki?”
Grunt.
Ahh, men. Elegant, articulate, heavy.
“Get off. You’re crushing me.”
Tokaki pushed up for a second, looked at her, seemed to consider her words. His eyes were heavy-lidded, barely open. There was still a flush to his face, making his cheekbones stand out all the more sharply.
He kissed her, then started to lower himself back onto her.
“Oh no you don’t.” She wedged her arm in between them and heaved him off. Tokaki rolled onto his back, arms flopping at his sides.
He looked half-dead…or a man in the throes of his first post-orgasm roll-over-and-go-to-sleep. Irritation warred with amusement, but it was just so damned cute to see the powerful, foreign Tokaki lying there strung out on sex that amusement won.
“Joanna,” he spoke softly, so low she almost didn’t hear.
“Yes?” She bent over, hair brushing his face. He was asleep.
Jo smoothed his hair, fixed his arms so they weren’t lying at odd angles. She should grab a blanket from…
From where?
She was in the temple of a race of creatures humans thought were gods. She had no memory of getting here. They were probably going to be smited by the Earth itself for dishonoring the place.
She looked at the sleeping Tokaki. He’d said no one else would come here, and as crazy as it sounded, she believed it when he said he’d protect her. She felt protected when he was around.
On her own. In a lost civilization’s temple.
“Call me Dr. Jones.” Humming the Indiana Jones theme song, she collected her scattered clothes. Now that the sex was over, the temple felt cold. Her thin shirt wasn’t much help. She looked in vain for shoes before remembering she hadn’t been wearing any.
Dressed, she started to explore the temple. The inlay in the floor was a large circle, set with lines leading into the center, like a bike wheel.
